Advising Fellow (AF) Leadership Team Member

Matriculate leverages peer-to-peer relationships and networks to empower high-achieving, low-income high school students to enroll in our best colleges. We train talented college students at top institutions to provide the information, guidance, and support that these high school students need to apply to, gain admission to, and excel at leading schools. 


Position Overview:

The AF Leadership Team will comprise of 3-5 Advising Fellows interested in leading recruitment, selection and training efforts on their respective campus. The AF Leadership Team will work collaboratively with the Head Advising Fellow(s) to recruit a quality group of AF applicants for the Matriculate program. The AF Leadership team will also play a critical role in managing and conducting interviews as well as selecting the incoming cohort of Advising Fellows. The AF Leadership Team will also be responsible for helping train AFs, monitoring program implementation, and suggesting and implementing program improvements.


AF Leadership Team members are unpaid volunteers who receive a monetary stipend. Some colleges may provide compensation or other opportunities for Advising Fellows, including the opportunity to receive course credit and/or work study. AFs on the Leadership Team may have the opportunity to travel to training conferences across the country.


Position Responsibilities:

Successfully complete HAF/AF Leadership Team training:

       Attend mandatory training retreat in New York in August 2017

       Pass a background check and series of assessments confirming content retention, readiness to recruit, and readiness to manage and assess AFs


Lead recruitment of 2018-2019 cohort on your campus:

      Assist HAF with creating a recruitment strategy to reach the recruitment goals set for your campus

      Work collaboratively with HAF, other Leadership Team members and Campus Manager to execute recruitment campaign to select group of top caliber Advising Fellows

      Plan and lead recruitment activities including:



      Flyering and hanging up signage

      Assist HAF with communication including:

      Sending personalized recruitment e-mails to potential         

     AF candidates

      Sending email blasts to campus listservs                     

      Organizing social media outreach

      Posting AF opportunity on campus boards, newsletters

     and newspapers (physical and digital)

      Tracking progress, checking eligibility of applicants, and

      following-up with incomplete applications

      Conduct assessments of AFs’ content knowledge and advising skills as part of the certification process

      Attend on campus training retreat for the 2018-2019 AF cohort

      Serve as an ambassador of the organization on campus and answer questions from potential Advising Fellows


Help improve the Matriculate program:

       Participate in evaluations during the semester

       Provide and incorporate feedback on the program


Time commitment:

      August 2017 to March 2018 (7 months)

      HAF/AF Leadership Team Training Retreat in August 2017

      September 2017 to March 2018 (5 hours a week) to:

o       Conduct outreach on campus to potential AF applicants

o       Ensure that Matriculate site reaches target AF number by recruitment deadline

o       Conduct interviews with AF applicants

o       Select cohort of high performing AFs

o       Administer Advising Skills Evaluations


Matriculate is looking for people who:

      Are committed to the Matriculate mission

      Are able to commit at least 5 hours a week from September 2017 – March 2018

      Are highly organized and have excellent judgment

      Have demonstrated leadership abilities

      Have exceptional communication and helping skills

      Have a GPA of at least 3.0

      Can be sensitive, supportive allies to low-income students who face obstacles in applying to college

      Are freshmen, sophomores, or juniors enrolled at a Matriculate college site

      Are in good standing with their college/university with no current pending disciplinary action



The AF Leadership Team will:

      Help build a sustainable, equitable solution to college access in America

      Have a hands-on leadership role

      Receive recommendations for jobs, internships, and graduate school from program staff

      Gain leadership, management, communication, coaching, writing, teaching, and advising skills

      Develop valuable interview and job skills

      Learn how a nonprofit organization works

      Have a leadership role in an elite fellowship on campus
